Coca-Cola

SO WHAT IS A BRAND, ANYWAY?

A brand is a set of perceptions and images that represent a company, product or service,
generally developed over time.  While many often refer to a brand as a ‘logo’, a brand is actually much larger than this as a whole.

A brand is the essence or promise of what will be delivered or experienced during the brand to consumer relationship (which obviously we all want to be fruitful and long-term).

Most importantly, brands enable a consumer to easily identify the offerings of a particular
company and directly affect their perceptions and association with things like credibility, quality, and loyalty towards it.

When it comes to spending money in today’s markets, consumers read books by the cover, and as such your brand needs to give the best first impression possible, otherwise your competition is going to stamp out every chance you have of that valuable second date.

WHO NEEDS A BRAND & WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

Regardless of whether you are a one man band or a fast-paced international, if you’re in
business, you need a brand.

Why? Because it’s your company’s identity – it’s the forefront of everything that you do and it represents you and your company in it’s entirity. I’m sure at some stage you’ve picked up a newspaper and looked through the local business ads? Or had a local business directory fall across your desk or through your letterbox – if you haven’t then go and grab one. Have a little flick through and I’m sure you’ll see the difference between companies that have spared a thought on their branding versus companies that have just ‘chucked something together’.

On the flip, think of a brand that really talks. Coca-Cola for instance. Ask virtually anybody on the planet what colour the label is on a bottle of Coke & they’ll tell you that it’s red (that’s serious reach). You remember their colours, their Christmas adverts, the taste of their products – and that’s just through the mention of their name !  Coca-Cola are synonymous with quality globally – and you should aspire to the same values when it comes to your brand identity.

So ask yourself, what does your brand say about your business?

Will it inspire a customer to choose you over others? Will it fill a customer with confidence on a first impression? Will it make a customer pick up the phone? Would you?

If you choose a ‘chucked together’ approach with your brand identity, do you think it makes prospective customers think you’re going to give them a quality service?
